Q: Can a Firewall Protect Servers From Overheating?
A: Really?
We’re being proactive with environmental monitoring given the record temperatures we’ve been having, the forecast of even more heat waves and the potential for rolling blackouts – blackouts that can cause issues with HVAC systems. Many of our clients have enclosed server rooms with independent AC systems and often left unattended for extended periods of time, such as over weekends. In the event of an AC failure or even a fire, they are at risk of having server room temperatures rise to damaging levels.
To mitigate this risk, we have been installing rack-mounted environmental sensor units that generate email alerts when temperatures get above a set temperature threshold. These versatile units can also be equipped to monitor humidity, ground water and notify on entry/exit. With a reasonable price-point it’s a sensible investment that can prevent a much more costly catastrophe.
If your server room is not equipped with either central or dedicated AC systems, we recommend a proactive approach with this, too. We can put you in touch with an HVAC contractor that specializes in data center cooling systems and project manage the installation for you.
Bottom line… be prepared.
