As a technology provider, we have an ongoing commitment to our clients to provide the utmost in data privacy and security. Specifically, delivery of our cloud-based DiVA Document Management service to US and European Union countries demands that we are in compliance with the U.S. ★ EU Safe Harbor Framework. So what does this mean?
In short, the European Commission’s Directive on Data Protection prohibits the transfer of personal data to non-European Union countries that do not meet the European Union (EU) adequacy standard for privacy protection. While the United States and the EU share the goal of enhancing privacy protection for their citizens, the United States takes a different approach to privacy from that taken by the EU. In order to bridge these differences the U.S. Department of Commerce in consultation with the European Commission developed a “safe harbor” framework to ensure that EU organizations know that US organizations provide adequate privacy protection, as defined by the Directive. To achieve this certification, we were required to certify that we comply with several Safe Harbor Principles related to security, privacy, access, data integrity, notice and transfer of data, and enforcement.
